Toasting the newly married couple is a time honored tradition. Add to that tradition vodka and a wardrobe of flavors, the martini is quickly becoming the couples drink of choice.
With its endless variations, a martini can please just about any palate. To the martini lover it’s like a closet filled with designer shoes.
The history of the martini dates back to the 1860’s and was said to be called the Martinez. Its original recipe called for four parts sweet vermouth and one part gin, a dash of aromatic bitters and a cherry.
As time progressed the martini became dryer and more sophisticated and by the 1900s a citrus twist had been added. No one knows for sure when the olive made its debut but until recently it was the martini’s official sidekick.
Today’s martinis are fun and can be sweet, like the chocolate kiss, sour as in the green appletini or smooth like the blue lagoon. Vodka has be come a big part of the drink replacing gin in many cases.
Couples are now indulging in a martini hour for guests, where there can be a bevy of flavors served. At the “martini hour” the cocktails and appetizers are paired. For example, a lemontini could be paired with shrimp cocktail, while the traditional James Bond martini could be paired with mini chateaubriand.
One company, Rosepetals.com has pushed the envelope with two wildly interesting flavored mixtures, the lavender martini and the rose martini. Made with essence of lavender and rose petals respectively just add vodka and these are perfect for any celebration!
Cocktails by Jenn has designed a very cool tote pack with a variety flavors (they even have chocolate peppermint), colorful straws and vodka is already added. These would be equally suited to the bachlorette party or placed on guests tables at the bridal shower and reception for the couples toast.
There’s no doubt, toasting has never been so much fun with the ever popular martini. You can find these products on line www.rosepetals.com and www.cocktailsbyjenn.com.
